But as some moved on- others stayed and pulled together. In 1934 Rayner's sold the drugstore to Harold and Olive Gaetz. The Gaetz's ran the drugstore until 1939 when WWII broke and Harold joined the armed services and went overseas.

In fact with the out break of World War II many of Breton's sons went to war.

And at home many followed the war from afar. The Jamieson's had a radio …something very few people had in those days. Many community members enjoyed listening to that radio for news and entertainment.

John Funnel was the only child of Richard and Louisa Funnel. John was raised on his father's homestead and attended the Funnel School in the early 1930's.

He enlisted in the Canadian army and served with the Cape Breton Highlanders in Italy where John Funnell was killed in action on September 30, 1944. He is at rest in the Cesena War Cemetery in Italy.

The 1950s and 60s saw people gradually moving away. The D.R. Fraser lumber company also moved in the mid 50s and so did most of the work in the region. Work in the oil patch would eventually come to Breton but change was slow, this was a time of transition for the changing hamlet.
