The CPR decided in 1892 that it would be to their advantage to obtain property in British Columbia and grow their own fruit for their dining cars and chain of lavish hotels. At that time the CPR was being well provided with fruit from the Coldstream ranch of Lord and Lady Aberdeen. In the interior of BC two choices were considered for the CPR fruit lot, one being the Trout Creek District, now called Summerland.
