Official Opening at Atton's Lake Well Attended

On Sunday afternoon, about 2000 people attended the official opening at the Elk's Beach at Atton's Lake. Over 1350 tickets were handed out to the kiddies at the gate for their free treats. The Elk's regret that due to unforeseen circumstances, the merry go round from Unity was unable to be present.

The six soft-ball teams were from Baldwinton, Gallivan, Ruth, Wembley, Rockhaven and Cut Knife. Several of the games were rather one-sided and only three innings were played. Ruth Hustlers won the first money and Cut Knife second.

The only girl's soft-ball game was between Maidstone and Cut Knife, with Maidstone winning the money for first.

Two booths were in operation and the Elk's regret that the ice cream and treats could not accommodate the kiddies.

Reports from the various committees in charge were very good and it is hoped that everyone enjoyed themselves. The proceeds will be used to make repairs and add new comforts for the campers and picnicers. The new well which has already been dug was not in use on the opening day, but it should be ready shortly. Mr. Beggs of Wilkie very kindly donated a pump for which the Elk's are indeed grateful.

By supporting the Elk's you also help the kiddies, so make the Elk's Beach at Atton's Lake your playground for the summer and come often!!

Capacity Crowd Second Annual

Since the official opening in June, Atton's Lake has been the scene of picnics, wiener roasts, boating, swimming and water sports, with people enjoying the facilities which have already been provided by the local Elks club. On Sunday, the ball park and sandy beach were thronged by people who came to enjoy the Cut Knife Elks Second Annual Regatta.

Although the events of the day weren't scheduled to start until 1 p.m. part of the crowd had arrived by 10:30 a.m. During the lunch hour, the booths were hardly able to keep up with the demand for hot-dogs, pop and ice-cream.

The boat races commenced at 1 p.m., and with the aid of a public address system, the various events were ably announced by Bob Bradburn. The races were supervised by the North Battleford Speed Boat Club, and Earl Latrase of that club was the official starter, assisted by Glen Perkin and Jack Coulter.

The races were divided into 5 classes; Class A Hydro, Class B Hydro, Class A Runabout, Class B Runabout and Open Runabout. Many of the same boats were no collisions or serious mishaps although two boats upset during the day. The drivers were not hurt (one had his helmet split in three pieces) but they were able to report that the fish were biting. We've all heard of those fish stories!

In the Class A and B Runabout races, Sammy Quebl of North Battleford finished first with Dorrie Edwards following close behind. Paul Cadrin's boat won the Open Runabout race, Jerry Kernon of Sutherland won the Class A and B Hydro races. During the races, two local boats, one owned by L.J. Forest and the other by Eugene Pellerin were used as pickups and rescued the wet drivers and brought their boats to shore.

The Lloydminster Lions Band with a company of about forty musicians and six majorettes entertained during the afternoon with various selections which were greatly enjoyed by young and old alike.

The double-header softball game between the Ruth Rustlers and Paynton Pats drew large crowds of fans for both games. Ruth won the first game by a margin of seven runs and the second game, which was closely contested, was also won by Ruth with a score of 11 to 7.

Following the last ball game and as soon as it was dark, an aerial display of fireworks was enjoyed particularly by the younger folk whose "Ohs" and "Ahs" were clearly visible.

An open air midnight frolic was attended by a good crowd which ended a fun packed day.

To all those who donated their services in any way, the Elks extend wheir grateful thanks and also to those who came and supported them. The proceeds are to be used to improve the park facilities, and if the new cabins that are going up are any indication of the popularity of the Beach, then their efforts are certainly well worthwhile.

Children's Day Draws Fair Crowd Despite Weather

Despite a dreary, rain threatened day, the Official opening of the Elks Beach at Atton's Lake was fairly well attended on Sunday, June 17. Between 650 and 700 adults and children were on hand to witness the public school softball tournament and the big event of the day , the drawing of the tickets which gave ownership to the newly erected cabin and the 7 ½ h.p. Evinrude Outboard motor.

Seven ball teams entered but only five were able to come and prove their ball playing abilities. Those playing were Vance, Cut Knife girls, Riding Hill, Dufferin and Cut Knife boys. The games were scheduled for only five innings, but a tied score between Vance and Riding Hill resulted in a seven inning game with Vance coming out on top. The final game between the Cut Knife boys and Dufferin was won by Cut Knife and they will receive the trophy.

A public address system kept the crowd informed of the various sports and interludes of music were enjoyed by all. The children's races were run at 3 o'clock with boys and girls from 3-12 years participating. A married ladies race provoked a couple of tumbles and bruised knees.

Following the final ball game, the Exalted Ruler, Bill Ross, carried the box of tickets onto the ball field and the all important draws were made. Stan Hewson of Cut Knife was the lucky winner of the cabin and Mrs. Junior Busch of Cut Knife was called as the winner of the outboard motor.

A well attended mid-night frolic under the stars with music by Lloyd Neno's orchestra, concluded the day's events.
