In 1930 Miss Eva Dennis, who with 10 years experience in teaching in St. Thomas, Ontario, joined Miss Patton as teacher and Principal at a yearly salary of $1000.00. So well respected were these two educators that each had a school named after them.

Disheartened by poor working conditions like low salaries, inadequate teaching materials and student absenteeism, many young school teachers left the schools they had been assigned to. They often asked to be transferred, which upset the continuity of the teaching in the schools concerned.

Classroom sizes, by this time, averaged 35- 45 students and the teacher's workload was reduced from teaching 8 to 4 grades. Rural one room schools where experiencing fewer students as village schools where enlarged. Rural female teachers earned slightly less, while male teachers continued to earn at least 10% more than their female counterparts.
