BOWLING

The first bowling facility in Grand Falls-Windsor was a two-lane house located on Bond Street some time prior to 1940. In 1940, the A.N.D. Company built an extension on the Town Club on High Street to include a four-lane bowling facility. The lanes were managed by William G. Pike and later by Gordon Carter, and became known locally as Carter's Lanes. Johnny McFarlane of the Daily Mail Library and druggist, Tom McCarthy were the first to roll balls down the lanes.

GRAND FALLS GOLF CLUB

The Grand Falls Golf Club was founded in 1924 by a group of prominent citizens, most of whom were employed by the Anglo-Newfoundland Development Company, owners of the newsprint mill. Golf was an early summer game that quickly took a foothold in the town. The land used for the golf course was part of the Company's Dairy Farm near Rushy Pond. The remainder of the pasture was turned over to the club in 1937. The original clubhouse was 90 quare foot shed which could only accommodate 12 of the 21 members.

After a few rough years of sharing terrain with livestock, a six-hole course was laid out near the river where the farm used to be. The original 25 members decided to invite six additional players. The general rules of golf were followed, often with exceptions catering to local conditions.

In the late 1930s, the company hired Roy Bell, a landscape architect, to design a nine-hole course encompassing all the farmland, the cost being borne by the company. A clubhouse was built, which has since been replaced several times.

BADMINTON CLUB

The Grand Falls Badminton Club was active in 1942 and started possibly as early as the 1930s, when GFA High on Memorial Avenue, with a new gymnasium, opened. This gym was the club's home until the 1990s when the school was closed. The club was then moved to Notre Dame Academy, now Millcrest Academy, and is active there to this day.

BADMINTON TOURNAMENT

Last night a most interesting tournament was held between the players of the Botwood Badminton Club, which was inaugurated this year, and the First Year players of the Grand Falls Club. This is the first time that Botwood has come up to try their skill against us here in Grand Falls and the event drew an enthusiastic number of fans. The players of both teams were very good indeed, and though they are comparatively new at the game, it was a most interesting evening for the spectators.

There was however, one exception to the First Year Players, Mr. Irvin of the Botwood team,is an old and experienced hand at the game and he pitted his strength against one of the best players on the Grand Falls team, Mr. Charlie James.

It was a very pleasant experience to have our near neighbours visit us and give us such strenuous competition, and we hope to have the pleasure of meeting them again in the near future.

The results of the games were as follows:-----12 sets were played; Grand Falls winning 10.

In the game between Mr. Irvin and Mr. James; the latter won.
