Mr. Hiebert took an active interest in village affairs and immediately
started to help develop Didsbury. He built the second store and the
first post office was opened in that same building. He became a general
merchant dealing with lumber & implements, and he founded a small
general store and a hardware store. The first grain elevator was built
in Didsbury in 1905 and owned by Messrs. B. J. Smith and C. Hiebert.

Cornelius Hiebert was appointed to serve as Village Overseer of the
Village from 1901 - 1904, thus began his political career at the
Municipal level. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly in 1905 when
Alberta became a province. He was the first MLA for Rosebud
Constituency, the first Mennonite elected to the Alberta Legislature, and
the sole provincially elected Conservative.

He supported prohibition and favoured the flying of the Canadian flag
over every school. Dissatisfied with some government measures, he ran as
an Independent in his second term allowing him to criticize government
measures that he did not support.

Mr. Hiebert felt he stood for the issues and not the party. He lost the
election in 1909 as people were not certain as to his opinions and
beliefs on political questions.

An article written in the Calgary Daily Herald reported that Mr. Hiebert
had not been the strongest leader imaginable and that by running as an
Independent, his attitude has shown itself to be of a particularly
spineless character.
