In 1834 the Scarborough Subscription Library was established in the home of David Thomson. In 1878 it became incorporated as Mechanics Institute. The old church manse was moved to a small lot across the road from the Sexton's house. Here the library flourished until 1896 when a new brick structure was erected adjacent to the church.

"It changed gradually and then for a long while it just stayed the same. When the people started moving in of course it got thicker and more buildings around. That's about all I can say about it. More people moved in, more buildings and that was it. There was quite a bit of forest. As I say, for a long time it stayed the same. Like, people cut down what trees they didn't want but then when that got over with then it changed it all. More buildings, more people, less trees. There's a lot of things I miss but I just sort of said well, you can't change it, you just gotta go along with it. It's like these people who hang on to their farms. You might as well go along with the way things are going".

-Bill Walton remembers Bendale changes
