The communion table and pulpit are in the front of the sanctuary.
In Baptist theology there is no mediator between the Christian and God the Father except that of the risen living Saviour, Jesus Christ. The communion table is placed between pastor (the pulpit area) and the people of the congregation to emphasize this fact. The pastor points the people to Christ. He does not come between the people and their Saviour. Each Christian has direct access to Jesus, who is God the Son, and they are empowered by God's Holy Spirit who lives within the Christian.
