The message relay loop was used by the Station master to hand over a train order to the conductor or the train mechanic. The letter could be collected in the locomotive or otherwise inside the station.

This was a ‘train order' received by Mr. J.P.Flanaghan as he was about to retire. The message stated that the route to retirement was clear and that he could safely move forward to a long and happy life. Mr. Flanaghan was a resident of Sutton and worked as a conductor for the CP until his retirement in February of 1957.

One of the many jobs of the train conductor was to check passenger tickets. Some passengers had special "passes" that allowed them to travel by train for free. In 1884, when CPR took over the route, one of the first things senior management did was to eliminate approximately 1000 of these passes – quick way to upset 1000 people!
