This continual sense of family can be directly correlated with the positive environment in which the hospital employees worked. Staff worked closely together and often times went above and beyond their call of duty to help out in emergency situations. In an interview with Don Bennett, former nursing assistant and store keeper, and his wife Joan, former lab and x-ray technologist at the Dr. Walter Templeman Centre, they recalled times when maintenance workers would leave what they were doing to go help out the nurses, whether it be to help move a patient or watch over the babies in the nursery. There was little sense of hierarchy among staff which attributed to the friendly and inviting atmosphere of the hospital.29

The 25th year celebration of the Dr. Templeman Health Centre was a shining moment for the residents of Bell Island. The community took this opportunity celebrated all of the incredible people and positive work done on the island. Residents came together for a number of events including a church service, dinner, variety show and dance.35
