Grand Trunk Railway (G.T.R.)

Beginning in 1886 the G.T.R. track was extended from Gravenhurst to Nipissing Junction. In 1889 the G.T.R. connected with the C.P.R. in Nipissing Junction bringing a huge amount of traffic from southern Ontario and where they had running rights to the C.P.R. depot.

In 1906 a line was built from Toronto to Sudbury which dramatically decreased the amount of rail traffic going through Nipissing Junction.

The agreement between the G.T.R. and C.P.R. lasted until 1911 when the G.T.R. came to an agreement with the T. &N.O. to utilize their facilities in North Bay. This made the G.T.R. the third railway to arrive in North Bay.

The G.T.R. had a dream like many railroads to construct their own trans-continental track by building segments themselves and by absorbing other smaller railroads.

This in fact ended up happening to the G.T.R. when they were absorbed into the C.N.R.

Canadian Northern (Ontario) Railway

The C.N.O.R. reached North Bay in 1913. Its line from Ottawa ran through to its station at Second Avenue and west to Sturgeon Falls and Capreol.

Like the G.T.R. the C.N.O.R. had aspirations of forming its own nationwide system and also like the G.T.R. they were absorbed by the C.N.R.

All of the completed C.N.O.R. track was removed from within North Bay.

The community of North Bay was a true transportation "hub" for the years 1913 to 1915 with four railways using the town.

However in 1915 the C.N.R. absorbed the financially strapped G.T.R. and the community was back to having three different railroads run through the town.
