Mining in Northern Ontario

Another industry that assisted greatly with the opening of the north was mining.

In the case of the silver discovery at Cobalt a gentlemen working on the construction of the T.& N.O. named Fred LaRose. He was one of the first to stake claim at Mile 103.

In general the construction of the T.& N.O. into the north allowed prospector's, urged on by the Cobalt discovery, to easily enter the north on their hunt for a major strike.

Cobalt was a community that grew quickly. The faster word spread about the discovery of silver the faster new prospector's arrived and they arrived by train.

This photograph was taken around 1905-1906 and by 1909 when the second T.& N.O. Station at Cobalt was completed the community was serviced by all professions. The community even had its own newspaper, the Cobalt Nugget, which later moved to North Bay and is the North Bay Nugget.
