BRITANNIA HERITAGE SHIPYARD

In 1990 developer Robbie Johnson gave the city of Richmond 8 acres of waterfront land, including the original Britannia cannery building which had been converted to a shipyard, in exchange for increased density on his adjacent 2-acre apartment site. By 1994 the Britannia Heritage Shipyard Society had received grants to restore and upgrade the heritage buildings. Richmond is developing the site with a mandate to depict boat building on the west coast. The site was declared an National Historic Site in 1996.

End of THE CANNERIES OF STEVESTON

Thanks to the efforts of heritage advocates, two of the oldest Steveston canneries, the Gulf of Georgia cannery and the Britannia cannery, have been declared National Historic Sites and have been preserved as public places. They are all that remains of a once thriving industry in Steveston.
