The town site, orginally known as "The Cross" or "The Crossroads" originated in the 1840s with a couple of stores and a tavern.
The settlement grew rapidly in the next two decades and was eventually named "Alberton" in 1862, in honour of Albert, Prince of Wales, who later became King Edward VII.

First impressions of the town when entering on route 12 from the West are the abundance of impressive old trees - oaks, elms, chestnuts and maples, as well as many stately homes, well maintained and with carefully tended lawns and gardens.
