As mentioned above, the opening of opportunities for women during the 1950s and 1960s gave Jewish women choices that their mothers did not have. Often these choices took them away from the city and more never returned, establishing their lives elsewhere. An example of this generation is Anne Selby, daughter of Rachel Selby. Anne left the city to attend university in 1952. After working for eleven years in public relations for Bell Canada she became director of communications for the Stratford Festival until her premature death in 1986.

Along with teaching and dietetics, nursing was one of the standard professions which women could enter before the social changes of the 1950s and 1960s allowed them access to a wider range of occupations.

The calibre of the cuisine of community events and the very existence of the 35 year old "new kitchen" in the Synagogue has been due in part to the input of dieticians among the women of the community.
