Many of the young women in the community spent many hours of their time working for their family's business or working on their own accord in order to help support their family or to make a bit of money for themselves. Marcia Freedman worked in the Belgium Glove and Hosiery shop and recalled spending more than her earnings on items from the store.

Two other examples of working girls in Saint John were Rachel Columbus Selby and her daughter Anne Selby. Rachel went to work on her own accord at age 14 in 1913 to help out her large family and sold shoes for six years before striking out on her own. Her older sister, Sadie went to work in the textile industry the same year. After selling dresses door to door for five years, Rachel opened her own store - Ray's Novelty Store - on Main Street in 1925. This was in the heart of the Jewish business district, prior to urban renewal in the 1960s.

The separations of city society and the closeness of the Jewish community meant that Jewish girls were mainly friends with other Jewish girls. When one did not have school work or roles to play in the family business, especially in the summer, one's leisure time was often spent with friends. These photographs depict the images of Jewish girls (and a few boys) at leisure, spent in the city or in the countryside at Pamdenec, Tucker Park or elsewhere.
