Before the 1950s, it was less common for a girl to leave the city in search of work - most who did leave did so as a result of marriage. As well, it was the sons of the family who were more often the first to go to university. An example of a woman, who did leave to attend university is Ruth Isaacs, daughter of Millie Isaacs. Ruth left Saint John in 1930 to attend university, taking a post-graduate course in library science in New York, where she lived and worked for many years.

As mentioned above, the opening of opportunities for women during the 1950s and 1960s gave Jewish women choices that their mothers did not have. Often these choices took them away from the city and more never returned, establishing their lives elsewhere. An example of this generation is Anne Selby, daughter of Rachel Selby. Anne left the city to attend university in 1952. After working for eleven years in public relations for Bell Canada she became director of communications for the Stratford Festival until her premature death in 1986.

That is not to say that Jewish women did not choose to enter the professions as a number of Jewish women became nurses, working the wards of the old Saint John General Hospital system, St. Joseph's Hospital and in private practice.
