The Kirkland Lake lodge (No. 1223) of B'nai Brith was founded in 1936, one of the first B'nai Brith lodges in north-eastern Ontario. As the first lodge in the area, it acted as mentor for other lodges including North Bay, Rouyn-Noranda, Timmins and Sudbury. The local lodge supported a number of local initiatives including service at the local hospital, periodically distributing scholarships at all of the local schools, underwriting the local boy scout troop and providing the funds to run a free bus service for children who wished to attend the local swimming pool. The lodge reached its a peak 1938 with a membership of ninety-five. The lodge continued into the sixties but its membership base was eroded by out-migration.

This is a B'nai Brith draw, being held to raise money to pay for the bus that was used to transport children uh from all over town to the swimming pool every day during the summer, the money was raised by having a draw.

In the picture we see Al Brown, who was then a young businessman in Kirkland Lake in the automotive parts business. Joe Dash, who was also a young businessman. I think by that time he had his own store, although I am not positive . And of course, the then Mayor of the town, Len Baird.

I belonged to Sisterhood and Hadassah and we did fashion shows and bake sales which you will find that the women in this town all remember Hadassah bake sales and the Hadassah fashion shows. I decorated the stage one time the whole stage in pastel, a scene from Paris for the background for the fashion show. I have a picture of it somewhere.
