When we were old enough, 10 or 11, we were able to become Juniors at the Tennis Club and for the fee of $3.00 a year were able to play tennis until 4 o'clock in the afternoon then the courts were cleared for the seniors. It didn't matter if there were seniors there or not, the juniors vacated.

When we were older we played in what we called the Big 6. There were 6 tennis clubs in the area and we had regular matches. This picture shows the Bedford team ready to play against the players from Carleton Club in Halifax. Bedford team is on the left and Carleton players on the right. In the front row Bedford players are, Marion Robb, Frances Pryor, Nellie Godwin, Margaret Heatley and Eleanor Ternan and in back, Jim Ternan, Bernard Fox, George Christie, Leo Burke and John Godwin.

When we weren't playing tennis or swimming we always had lots to do and we didn't have a Recreation Commission to provide us with all the activities that they do today. There was little traffic on the road and we seemed to roam at will. We would walk down to Moirs Mill lured by the smell of chocolate which permeated the whole area, and sometimes someone would give us a little piece, or, when we had bicycles, we would drive up to the Rifle Range and that seemed like a day's journey.

We had Scouts and Girl Guides and we had hikes out to Sandy Lake and on occasions we hiked over to Colonel Curran's, where the Magazine is now, and he had an ice cream freezer, and the ice cream which we all took turns turning, was always a treat. Here is a picture of some of us having fun. There's Agatha, Tony's mother in the back, with the white shirt. And I'm down front in the middle, the biggest one so I was holding everbody up.

We never saw a movie, but we had church concerts, and community concerts held at the Club House, and we had many school concerts, closings, Christmas, and a very important one on Empire Day, the day before May 24th, Victoria Day, which was always a holiday. We were very Empire conscious in those days, after all it was war time, and very patriotic, and I still remember the start of a recitation I had on one such occasion-"Hat's off, along the street there comes, the blare of bugles, the ruffle of drums, a flash of colour beneath the sky, Hats off, the flag is passing by." (Applause) On the first Friday of May we had what we called Arbor Day when we had a holiday to clean up the school and the school yard, and then we would go up to what we called Green Hill, about where Bridge Street is now, at the end of Union Street, to pick mayflowers.

Here is a picture of the school. It had two rooms, what we called the Little Room and the Big Room. The classes were large and I don't know how the teachers coped.

We have a Christmas folder put out by the school for the year 1906-1907. It lists every child in the school by grades. In the little room, grades 1-4, there are 71 children listed. They couldn't have all been there the same day. There are 33 names in grade 1, 13 in grade 2, 11 in grade 3, and 14 in grade 4. There were 40 in the Big Room, 18 in grade 5, 6 in grade 6, 9 in grade 7, and 7 in grade 8.
