Bedtime

There was a study period from 7:30 to 9 p.m. which we spent in study halls. Afterwards, we went up to bed. We had a large dorm with beds separated by curtains. So it wasn't possible for anyone to stay up late. I think it was lights out at 9:30. There wasn't much room in the dorm. We had small basins of water for washing, and we took a shower twice a week, depending on our schedule.

Rooms and Modern Amenities

My room at the boarding school has a sink, bed, desk and some shelves. There's a bathroom on each floor with a bath, two showers and two toilets. The telephones are in the basement. There's also a community room for watching television.

The tartines à la mélasse

I remember they served us those famous tartines à la mélasse at snacktime in the morning and, especially, the afternoon. There were huge piles of bread, and molasses was poured on top of them. The best slices were the ones at the bottom because they were soaked with molasses – all positively dripping. They were so good! I've never eaten anything like them since. We used to make them at home, but they were never as good as the ones at the college. Why? We don't know. It's just one of those mysteries of college life.

Feast Days: Special Treats

On the feast of Saint Angela or the Immaculate Conception, the boarders were treated to a special snack - vanilla cakes with a delicious homemade icing. These cakes were fantastic, they were very, very good. We enjoyed them enormously because these were the only two times during the year when we got to eat something different.
