PIONEER SHOEMAKER'S SHOP

Shoes and boots were made locally by the shoemaker who often made harnesses and other leather goods for horses. This small shop contains all the equipment necessary to produce shoes for the family and boots for working. Hanging on the wall are various leathers used by the shoemaker - cowhide, kip and calfskin.

SHOE FORMS

On the floor in front of the low bench are forms similar to sock dryers. The tub would have held water to soften the leather. Behind the bench is a deerskin bone that would have been used in shaping boots. Note the small wood compartments for holding nails and small items.
