A fair quantity of local fruit was taken by the farmers to the local markets. One of the largest area markets was in Hamilton. Farmers began to set up fruit stands on their properties, a tradition that continues today.

At the end of the day, the farmers would have a late supper and then sit down to do their daily book work. Farmers were also expected to be shrewd businessmen and most took care of their own books and records. Growing up on a farm meant that every member of the family had his own job to do to make sure the farm was running smoothly. Children were also given chores and put to work on the farm at a very young age. The wives and daughters would help on the farm and prepare dinner. Many of these women would prepare recipes with the fruits and vegetables grown on their own farms. Their recipes were shared across generations and between friends.

FARMS CHANGE OVER TIME
Over the past two centuries, farmers have experienced many changes in the way their farms operate. Many of these changes can be attributed to inventions and technological advancements. Some of the technological advancements that have affected farms and farming practices include the invention of the steel plough, electricity and the telephone. The arrival of the railway, invention of refrigeration and shipping advancements have helped to improve the profits farmers can obtain from their produce and increase the size of their market. Irrigation, tractors, harvesting machines and other mechanizations have allowed farmers to produce a larger quantity of better fruit and co-operative organizations have helped them obtain a fair price for their produce.
