"I only remember the names of three people-two girls that I think were cousins-Ruby and Leslie; and a girl named Lydia Poole. I was the youngest Yank on the hill, so I got to know all three girls. There were only between the ages of 14-17. We had fun watching movies at the site and sledding down the road to the beach (frozen harbour)."

" I recall being down to Lydia Poole's home, sitting in front of a wood burning stove, listening to Kitty Wells music on her family's radio and hearing personal messages being broadcast to all the villages at a certain time in the evenings. The messages consisted of the arrival times that someone would be back to their village on the coastal ferry, birth announcements, deaths or illnesses, etc. I can still hear the station's call sign- "CJON, St. John's, Newfoundland."
