In the Early days of Birchy Bay the need of education was not so greatly cherished as it is today. The days were long and the young men and women had chores and jobs to do limiting their time for education. The young men and women were measured by how much they could work not by how much they knew. But yet the early settlers of Birchy Bay and Baytona found it essential to teach their children how to read and write. As time progressed and the population grew they also found need for a school and a teacher.

Like many of the early Families the Canning family was reputed to have been taught by pioneer John Canning how to read and write from his Bible and Prayer book. Although the amount of education they would have received from that would not amounted to much. However it was enough for them to be able to make sure that the Merchants back in Barr'd Islands did not rob them blind.

In 1906 the Methodist Church began to function partly as a school for the young people that lived there. The first Teacher in Birchy Bay was Mrs.Woolfry from Mortons Harbour. The teachers of that school would board with Mr. Samuel Mews Sr. Education was still not held in high importance and the grades in school only went from primmer to Grade four. The school would only function for six months of a year. The church that functioned too as a school was taken down in 1949.

In Baytona a humble tilt owned by Henry Combden was used to house the students of that area. The first teacher was Ms. Violet Lewis latter Quinlan. There were only a handful of students and they would attend school about five months a year. The next teacher in Baytona was Mr. Herbert Lewis.

The Education system of Birchy Bay and Baytona basically started from humble prayer books around kerosene lamps. The days are now long past of such and education has a much greater footing today as it did in the past but it is from the past where it is to today.
