The Greater Sudbury Police Pipe and Drums

The Greater Sudbury Police Pipe and Drums (also knows as the Greater Sudbury Police Pipe Band) was inaugurated in the summer of 1988 at the opening ceremonies of the World Junior Games. It began with a small group consisting of 4 Pipers and 6 Drummers. Founding members included Constable Larry Kilby, Staff Sergeant Dave Linney and Don Farquarson. The band wears the "Ramsey" tartan in honour of John Ramsey, founding father of the CIty of Greater Sudbury, and it also happens to be blue, which sympolized the "police" aspect of the Band. The band received numerous awards including the Near North Pipe Band competition, which was held in Callendar, Ontario in 2003

The band attends between 80 and 100 events per year including parades throughout Northern Ontario and the Police Memorial in Ottawa. They practice every Monday evening at a local highschool and have grown considerably since 1988. The band is currently comprised of 25 members including 15 Pipers, 7 Drummers and 2 Drum Majors.

L'il Rookie

In 1987, the Sudbury and District Insurance Brokers Association donated the funding towards the purchase of a robot car to be used for school and community based projects. A "Name the Police Robot Car" contest was held in conjunction with Police Week 1987. Students from Kindergarten to grade five inclusive were eligible. An independent panel of judges selected the name 'L'il Rookie", which was submitted by Andrew Zuccolo, a grade four student of St. Remi Separate School.

Hydro/ Transit/ Municipal Watch
(also known as Neighbourhood Watch)

The personality of the municipality and its neighbourhood communities can have a direct relation to its crime rate. The saying "there is strength in numbers" and that the eyes and ears of the community reduce crime" is certainly applicable in community crime prevention. Communities that co-operate with local authorities and band together to organize and maintain a strong anti-crime network send a very clear message to burglers, robbers, vandals and other suspicious persons that they will not tolerate such violations in their communities.

These watches are gearned to assist the public in deterrig incidents occuring in their municipalities.

Tim Hortons "Earn a Bike" Program

The Tim Hortons "Earn a Bike" program is a community- oriented sponsorship program where kids between 10 and 14 years of age team up with community partners to help clean up their local streets, parks and schools. Each participant completes 30 hours of community service and is rewarded with their very own Tim Hortons Minelli-Leader mountain bike and Bell helmet, courtesy of the local Tim Hortons store owner. The children are selected from organizations such as Big Brother and Big Sisters by the police department who also co-ordinate the program and provide supervision while the kids are out doing their part to make the community a cleaner, brighter place to live.
