Tobacco

Many boys attending rural schools started smoking at quite an early age. They would sometimes find a place to smoke at school. Some of the favorite smoking places were behind the barn, in the outhouse, in the woodshed or in some surrounding bushes. Of course they often got caught.(usually because someone tattled to the teacher). Many a boy had his first taste of smoking at these rural schools.

The Cow at Bentley School

A lady who lived near Bentley School always tethered her cow on the school playground. The students didn’t like this as when they were playing they were apt to step in a "cow pie". Some of the older students decided to start milking the cow at recess so she would be dry when the owner decided to milk her in the evening. As a result the owner finally found other pasture for the cow.

Incident at Carritt School

One former student from Carritt School remembers a day when the School Inspector came for a visit. The students of course were told to be on their best behavior. At recess they were playing Ante-I-Over the school. This student, who was in grade three at the time, threw the ball right into the school window and broke it. The other students immediately scattered and he was left alone, scared and crying. The teacher came out to console him. She was soon joined by the Inspector and much to the frightened boy’s surprise the "feared Inspector" turned out to be kind and sympathetic.
