The idea of the big potato came Jimmy Stewart of Knutsford in 1996. He contacted Community Development Officer, Eva Rodgerson with the idea and she went to work on getting it built. It was brought before the Community Council and they agreed with the idea. The Public and private sectors were approached for donations and the spud was built for $7500. It gets seen by 10,000 visitors a year.

The old telephone office is the newest building added to the Museum Complex and repairs were completed in 2003. In 1928 a much improved telephone office was built on a small lot of land on O'Leary Main Street, and operated until 1968 when the automated dial system came into operation.

On May 11, 1968, a steering committee of eight members met at the O'Leary Library to discuss possible celebrations as a follow up to Centennial celebrations held in O'Leary in 1967. It was decided that the future celebrations be called "Potato Blossom Festival" and be held in July when the potatoes are in full blossom. Dr. Dewar joined forces with the original committee members to promote the first festival. Dr. Dewar participated by driving his convertible classic in the parade.
