Throughout the years Maida loved sports, and excelled in many of them. She enjoyed playing tennis especially, and from an early age her level of skill and agility was noted by Percy. In 1908 in a ladies doubles game where they energetically gained their points Percy recorded of the duo "The girls shut down steam by request and the first (Love) set". Again in 1910 she won two matches against 'The Lady Champion of Winnipeg' that were hosted in Treesbank and Stockton.

Maida was a graceful dancer, light on her feet and often the star of the dance. It was a common competition between the males to see who 'could swing her off her feet' although many tried, few ever succeeded. Her feet were always under her control no matter how swiftly and lightly they were moving to the rhythm.

In 1913 Percy hired Mr. Gowan, an Irish fellow to help on the farm. Although he came to work on the farm, he soon assumed a greater place among the family as Evelyn suffered with an undiagnosed illness presenting itself in a form of melancholia and listlessness. Evelyn found refuge in the quiet man whom he could talk to. After World War one, Mr. Gowan appealed to another member of the household. Julia and Mr. Gowan got married in 1920 and lived in the old post office at St. Albans.

Alma was the youngest child of the family and with a sunny disposition she was loved by everyone. She made pets of all the farm animals and with Talbot, only her senior by three years, would make streams together - run offs for the melt water in spring. Alma was also a tennis player, "second to Maida among all the lady players around".

After Alma got severe pains in her leg from twisting it carrying wood to her mothers stove Percy was worried. After an examination a lump the size of a goose egg was found on her side, which had been growing for over two years. After the doctor arrived, and later returned with nursing staff they performed surgery right in the house.
